You may be thinking, ‘Social Media Branding? What is that and why should I care?’
Most personal profiles are an ever-changing stream of vacation photos, selfies, and pet videos. Your profile is the perfect place to publish your latest life updates as well as like and share your favorite things. While this approach works for a personal page, a business profile needs to be approached a bit differently.
Imagine if a business changed their logo and signs once a week. Your customers may think that you have moved, or that the business has changed hands. Keeping your identifying marks consistent and at the forefront of your business communications is essential for building brand recognition and brand loyalty.
When someone sees your logo or your photo you want them to immediately know who you are in a sea of others who do similar work. It’s the summation of who you are as a company: your positive business qualities, the way you work with customers, your reputation in the community. Building brand recognition starts with consistent use of color, imagery and tone throughout your online presence.
Social Media Branding: Profile Pictures
If your business is based around you personally, get a clear headshot and use it for all of your profiles. Otherwise, use the company logo for your profile pic.
Profile Picture Design Example:
My picture that appears on my business cards is the profile picture I use online. Often, when I meet people for the first time, they feel as though we’ve already met because they’ve seen me so often online. Being familiar and approachable is a key part of my ‘brand identity‘ as well as my personality.
Social Media Branding: Photo and Banner Sizes
Banner background images should compliment your brand in color and style. They can be changed seasonally or more often to promote special events. Here are the 2016 profile picture and banner sizes for three popular social media platforms.

Testing on Multiple Devices
Your profile picture and banner will appear differently depending on the device. Phones and tablets will show a mobile version while desktop browsers will show the full webpage.
